1.0 Introduction
================
Welcome to the land of the Barons. Barons is an online multi-player
game designed to run under a number of popular BBS systems. It is a
challenging game of strategic skill as well as interactive combat.
If you have not already done so, you may wish to read section 3.0 on
how to setup the game and then the user documentation prior to reading
the rest of this file.

3.0 Installing and Executing Barons
===================================
To install Barons on your system, it is recommended that you use the
install package included with the game. The package requires the files
contained within MYCROFT.ZIP. If you are stubborn and refuse to do it
the easy way, then you can follow these steps:
A. Make a directory to store the door in. This can be anywhere you
want. For illustration, I'll use C:\BARONS.
B. In this directory, create a directory called SCREENS and one
called DOCS.
C. Copy all of the documentation files for Barons into
C:\BARONS\DOCS (these are the files ending in .DOC), in addition
to a file called BARUDOC.ZIP.
D. Copy all of the screen files for Barons into C:\BARONS\SCREENS
(these are the files ending in the these extensions: .ASC, .IBM,
.CLR).
E. Copy BARONS.EXE, BARONS.CFG and MONSTERS.TXT into C:\BARONS.
F. Copy NODES.BBS and PORTS.BBS into your main BBS directory.
G. Edit the configuration file (BARONS.CFG) to your liking (see
section 4.0).
H. If you have an authorization file, copy it into C:\BARONS.
To execute the game, you will need to follow one of the sets of
directions below, depending on what BBS system you are using:
3.1 Local Mode
--------------
To run Barons in local mode, just change to the Barons directory
and type BARONS with no arguments, like this:

3.11 Spitfire
-------------
To run Barons under Spitfire, change to the Barons directory and
run Barons with the node number as the first parameter, the full
path to the main BBS directory as the second parameter, and use
either SPITFIRE (to use as a door), SPITFIREK (to use from the Main
menu user command), SPITFIREM (to use from the Message menu user
command), or SPITFIREF (to use from the File menu user command) as
the third parameter, like this:
BARONS <node> <path> SPITFIRE
Barons assumes that the following files are in the directory
specified by the path parameter when running directly under
Spitfire BBS:
NODES.BBS Node definition file.
and one of these, depending on which area you are using:
SFDOORS.DAT Each of these files contains all of the users
SFMAIN.DAT settings such as graphics, parity, baud rate,
SFMESS.DAT etc.

4.0 Configuration File
======================
The Barons configuration file should be located in the same directory as
Barons and is used to control various aspects of the game. It should be
named BARONS.CFG and a sample has been provided. Inside the file, lines
which start with a pound sign (#) are considered comments. Each config
line is made up of a keyword, an equal sign, and a value to assign to
the keyword.
4.1 On/Off Switches
-------------------
The following keywords can only be in one of two states: ON or OFF.
By default, all of them are set to OFF. All of these switches may
be altered at any time without disturbing the game in progress.
4.1.1 TEST_CONFIG
-----------------
When this is set to ON, the configuration file will be parsed
and then the configuration parameter will be displayed to your
local screen. This is meant to allow the sysop to determine
whether his configuration parameters are being interpreted
correctly.
4.1.2 ERASE_ASSETS
------------------
When this is set to ON, and a Baron is reincarnated (or removed
through use of the built-in editor), every town and castle that
is currently owned by him is reset to a unowned town with
starting levels of population and defenses.
4.1.3 DOWNLOAD
--------------
When this is set to ON, the players are allowed to download
the documentation file in either normal or compressed forms.
In order for this to work, you must have DSZ.COM in your path,
and you must have the files referenced by the configuration
parameters DOC_FILE and COMPRESSED_DOC_FILE available. Note
that this option is not apparent from local play, as
downloading locally is not allowed (or needed...).
4.2 File Names and Paths
------------------------
The following keywords define where certain files are to be found
or placed. All of these may be altered at any time, however, care
must be taken that if you change where a file is expected to be
found or its name, that you also make the corresponding change to
the actual file's location or name.
4.2.1 ERROR_LOG
---------------
This is where all of the error logging for Barons is kept. By
default, this is set to BARONS.ERR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.2.2 TIME_FILE
---------------
This tells Barons where to find the control file for the
TIMEGEN functions (see section 8.0). By default, this is set
to BARONS.TIM.
4.2.3 DOC_FILE
--------------
This is where Barons expects to find its User Documentation.
By default, this is set to DOCS\BARONS.DOC.
4.2.4 COMPRESSED_DOC_FILE
-------------------------
This is where Barons expects to find a compressed version of
the file referenced in the DOC_FILE configuration item. By
default, this is set to DOCS\BARUDOC.ZIP.
4.2.5 COMPRESSION_TYPE
----------------------
This item doesn't really belong in "File Names and Paths",
however, it is here because it is used to describe to the user
what type of compression has been used on the compressed
documentation file referenced in the COMPRESSED_DOC_FILE
configuration item. By default, this is set to PKZip.
4.2.6 RANKINGS_FILE_A
---------------------
This is where Barons will place the ASCII version of the
rankings file bulletin. By default, this is set to
RANKINGS.BBS.
4.2.7 RANKINGS_FILE_C
---------------------
This is where Barons will place the ANSI color version of the
rankings file bulletin. By default, this is set to
RANKINGS.CLR.
4.2.8 ALL_TIME_HIGHS_A
----------------------
This is where Barons will place the ASCII version of the past
winners of Barons bulletin. By default, this is set to
ALLTIME.BBS.
4.2.9 ALL_TIME_HIGHS_C
----------------------
This is where Barons will place the ANSI color version of the
winners of Barons bulletin. By default, this is set to
ALLTIME.CLR.

4.3 Game Constraint Settings
----------------------------
The following keywords control certain aspects of the game, and,
with the exceptions of MAX_COMBATS and COUNTDOWN, cannot be changed
during a game in progress without a restart. Not restarting the
game will cause all sorts of odd results, none of which are very
predictable.
4.3.1 TOWN_ROWS
---------------
This controls the number of rows of towns in the town map.
Each row is 26 towns wide. The minimum number of town rows is
3 and the maximum is 26. By default, it is set to 10.
4.3.2 MAX_PLAYERS
-----------------
This controls the maximum number of players allowed in a game.
The minimum number of players allowed is 1 and the maximum is
80. By default, it is set to 30.
4.3.3 MAX_MESSAGES
------------------
This controls the maximum number of messages allowed in the
message base. After this number is reached, the message base
will begin purging old messages to make room for new ones.
The minimum number of messages allowed is 25 and the maximum
is 500. By default, it is set to 50.
4.3.4 MAX_MSG_LINES
-------------------
This controls the maximum number of lines a message can
contain. The minimum number of lines is 10 and the maximum
is 100. By default, it is set to 30.
4.3.5 MAX_COMBATS
-----------------
This controls the maximum number of monster combats a player
can have per day. The minimum number of combats is 5 and the
maximum is 100. By default, it is set to 15.
4.3.6 COUNTDOWN
---------------
This controls the number of days that will pass after all of
the unowned towns have been taken before the game ends and a
winner is declared. Once the countdown has gone into effect,
you will need to alter it in the built-in editor for any
changes to it to take effect. The minimum number of days is
5 and the maximum is 100. By default, it is set to 15.

4.4 Editor Privileges
---------------------
The following keywords control access to the built-in editor. All
of them by default are empty, which indicates no one is allowed to
access the editor from within the game.
4.4.1 SYSOP1_NAME
-----------------
Anyone logging into the game with a BBS name that matches this
name (not case sensitive) will gain editor privileges within
the game. If the SYSOP_PASSWORD configuration keyword has been
set, then a password will be required before any actual access
to the editor will be allowed.
4.4.2 SYSOP2_NAME
-----------------
This is the name of a second person who is allowed into the
editor as in 4.4.1 above.
4.4.3 SYSOP3_NAME
-----------------
This is the name of a third person who is allowed into the
editor as in 4.4.1 above.
4.4.4 SYSOP_PASSWORD
--------------------
If this is set to anything, then anyone attempting to use the
game editor will be asked to enter this password before being
allowed to use it. The password IS case-sensitive.

5.0 Initializing a New Game
===========================
To initialize a new game of Barons, change to the Barons directory and
execute Barons with the -I option:
BARONS -I
Note that Barons will automatically initialize itself, but this is
provided in case you want to restart a game prematurely without saving
the winner.

6.0 Resetting In-Use Flags
==========================
Occasionally, users will get their in-use flag stuck on, because of
power outages, system crashes, etc. There are two ways to determine if
a user has his in-use flag set. The first is to just have the user
attempt to log into Barons. If Barons tells him he is already logged
in (and you know he isn't), then it is set. The other way is to log
in to the Barons editor and check his in-use flag there. To reset the
in-use flag for a single person, you can use the editor and just toggle
it to the off position. If you think there may be more than one person
suffering from this, it is much easier to just use the -R option.
Change to the Barons directory and execute Barons with the -R option:
BARONS -R
Note that this should NEVER be done when a user is actively playing the
game. Unpredictable results may happen.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
7.0 Running Nightly Maintenance
===============================
Barons should have its nightly maintenance run just after midnight each
night. To accomplish this, change to the Barons directory and execute
Barons with the -M option:
BARONS -M
Note that Barons will automatically do this for you if you don't do it
before a user logs in after midnight. The only drawback to this is
that the user gets stuck waiting for the maintenance to run during his
time online.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
8.0 Adding Time Controls
========================
Barons contains the ability to control access of the game by security
level, time of day, total play time per day, total play time per game,
total game count per day, and time required to wait in between games.
The time control file may be used directly under a BBS or also with the
door monitor. If not included, then only the standard time controls are
used.
The time definition file is an ASCII file used to create the time
control data file. It has the following format:
:SYSOP 1000 2330 ; Sysops hours
:LEVEL 006 007 008 008 008 008 008 008 ; Level access classes
:DAYT 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 ; Daily time limits
:DAYG 001 002 003 003 003 003 003 003 ; Daily game limits
:WAIT 000 030 030 000 000 000 000 000 ; Time between games
:TIME 0000 060 060 060 060 060 060 060 120 ; Per game access
:TIME 0600 000 030 030 030 030 030 030 030 ; Per game access
:TIME 1000 000 045 045 045 045 045 045 120 ; Per game access
:TIME 1600 000 030 030 030 030 030 030 030 ; Per game access
:TIME 2000 000 045 045 045 045 045 045 060 ; Per game access
The first entry defines the Sysop hours. This controls when the player
may use the page command. These entries are expressed as HHMM. The
second entry may be smaller than the first. As an example,
":SYSOP 0700 1900" allows the player to use the page command from 7am
until 7pm. The entry ":SYSOP 2200 0200" allows the page command to be
used between 10pm and 2am.
The ":LEVEL" entry defines how different security level users have
access to the game. This line consists of 8 entries in ascending order.
Each entry corresponds to a game control level. As an example let us
consider the following entry: ":LEVEL 010 020 030 040 050 060 070 080".
Any user with a security level of less than 10 would not have access to
the game. Users with security level 10 through 19 would have level 0
privileges. Users with security level 20 through 29 would have level
1 privileges, etc. Privileges are explained below.
The ":DAYT" entry defines the maximum time in minutes each privilege
level may play the game per day. This entry consists of 8 values each
corresponding to a privilege level in ascending order. Each value is
in minutes. A value of 0 represents no daily time limit for that
particular privilege level.
The ":DAYG" entry defines the maximum number of times the user may enter
the game on a given day. It consists of 8 values each corresponding to a
privilege level in ascending order. A value of 0 represents no game
limit for that particular privilege level.
The ":WAIT" entry defines the amount of time in minutes each user must
wait between entering the game. This entry consists of 8 values each
corresponding to a privilege level in ascending order.
Mycroft Systems, P.O. Box 7672, San Jose, CA. 95150 BBS: (408) 927-0105
The Land of the Barons, Version 4.00 Page 17
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ":TIME" entries define the amount of time each user may spend during
a single play session. It consists of 9 values. The first is the time
of day the period starts. The remaining 8 are the game time limits for
each of the 8 privilege levels. Time limits are in minutes. A 0 value
here means that the user my not play the game during that time period.
Each ":TIME" entry must be in ascending time of day order. There may be
a maximum of 8 ":TIME" entries.
To build the time control file, the following command line is used:
TIMEGEN def_file time_file
Where def_file is the ASCII file defining all time controls and
time_file is the output file that the game will read. For Barons, use
the following command line:
TIMEGEN times.def barons.tim

Alt F1 This key will eject a user from the game by
setting all his time to consumed.
Right Arrow This key will add one minute of game time to
the current users current game session.
Left Arrow This key will subtract one minute of game time

11.0 Monsters File Format
=========================
The Monsters file should be located in the same directory as Barons and
is used to define the monsters a Baron is allowed to fight. It should be
named MONSTERS.TXT and a sample has been provided. Inside the file,
lines which start with a pound sign (#) are considered comments. Each
line contains a single monster definition. The information contained on
the line must be in the following order and must never exceed the size
limitations stated below:
11.1 Level
----------
This controls which level the monster is placed in for combat. The
field width is 2 characters. One monster MUST be provided for each
level from 1 to 30 in order for the game to run.
11.2 Monster's Name
-------------------
This controls the monster's name and can be up to 21 characters
long. You are not allowed to use spaces within the name, however,
by placing underscores (_) where you want a space, they will be
substituted for spaces when the file is parsed.

to a random number from 1 to its quickness range to determine the
monster's quickness. The field width is 2 characters.

then added to a 50 gold piece bonus for the total amount that is
given to the victorious Baron. The field width is 3 characters.
11.13 Frequency Start Range
---------------------------
This is used to determine how often a monster is fought. A random

fight him. If that number is greater than or equal to the
frequency start range number, and less than or equal to the
frequency end range number, then that monster is picked. Note that
if no monster is found for some reason, then the first monster in
the list of that level will be chosen. The field width is 3

A.0 Limitations in the Unregistered Version
===========================================
The unregistered version of this door has some limitations. These
limitations are to encourage the registration of the door. If you and
your users enjoy the door, you should register it. The following is a
list of restrictions in the unregistered version:
* Unregistered version banner with 10 second delay between menus
after a 30 day trial period has elapsed.
* Occasional unregistered version messages.
Please note that none of the above limitations affects game play
directly, although after 30 days, it will become quite annoying to sit
through the menus.
